Mar Menor Bridge 06/09/2010

The lifting bridge El Estacio that gives access to the Mar Menor from the Med and vice versa has new opening hours, the openings are now 08.00, 10.00, 12.00, 18.00 and 20.00 hours.

Does anyone know of any boatyards that offer value for money, we need to have our annual lift out and so far the local yards seem to be asking silly money for a lift out, wash off and anti-fouling, so far been quoted well over 1200€ for a 37 foot yacht - any suggestions welcome

Mar Menor bridge plays havoc with local yachtsmen due to reduced opening times. The bridge known as El Estacio in La Manga provides access from the Mediterranean into the Mar Menor and vice versa. The local council has basically shut the bridge on yachts by reducing the opening to twice daily, once at 10.00hrs followed by a second lift at 19.00hrs. Small boats may still pass under the 7m clearance at any time but even small yacht are restricted, the problem is made worse bu the fact that there is nowhere safe to wait for the bridge if the conditions in the Mediterranean turn foul. Nothing is likely to change for the foreseable future so yachtsmen are advised to plan journeys accordingly and arrive close to the opening times to save wasted time.
We will of course up date you as things develop, so keep an eye on the blog or email us at info@go-n-sail.com

Spain hits boaters hard with Luxury Tax on all vessels over 8m in length. As normal in Spain there is a differing outcome according to whom you speak to. As I understand it, if you are a non resident i.e spend less than 183 day per year in Spain then the tax does not apply, however the law also takes into account the tax status of those who use the vessel, so transfering the boat to another person does not necessarily solve the problem. Residents are obliged to pay the 12% tax and import their boat onto Spanish flag. If non residents choose to pay the tax, they may keep their original flag state. Due to the complexities of this subject, legal advice should be sought.
